Shanghai Asks Public to Say What Is Waste
Adjust font size:

Shanghai’s environment watchdog has started an online survey asking the public for its opinion on how to categorize waste in order to improve recycling in the city.

The survey, launched by the Shanghai Administration on City Appearance and Environmental Sanitation, will last till June 15.

Two hundred respondents will be selected at random from among all the participants in the survel and awarded souvenirs, Youth Daily reported today.

Anyone interested can log onto www.sh1111.gov.cn and www.online.sh.cn to join in the survey. People can also download the questionnaire from the above Websites and mail the completed printed version to Room 706, No. 356, Beijing Road E., 200001 or fax to 6329-8951. No English version is available for the online version and questionnaire.

The survey consists of 12 multiple-choice questions focusing on the categorization and collection of waste.

The city currently categorizes solid wastes as glass, harmful garbage and burnable trash, based on the requirements of the garbage burning plants.

The survey offers more choices such as dividing them into kitchen waste, recyclable waste and composting waste. People can also choose the options like dry and wet waste or organic and inorganic waste.

Shanghai has tested the categorization of solid wastes since 1995 in some residential areas and promoted the special collecting of waste batteries and waste glass.

The Ministry of Construction in 2000 announced that Shanghai was one of eight cities selected for a pilot project on recycling.
