Beijing's Xinfadi Market, the city's largest wholesale food market, is bustling with activity as it hosts a Spring Festival-themed promotional fair that started on Jan. 13. On the opening day of the fair, 105,000 metric tons of products were sold, with total turnover reaching 726 million yuan ($107 million).
As the Spring Festival approaches, demand for fruits continues to rise. The market has procured fruits from major production areas in advance to ensure timely supply. Recently, citrus fruits such as tangerines, sugar oranges and red grapefruits have been particularly popular. Moreover, strawberries, durians, and cherries have been the top choices on many people's Spring Festival shopping lists.
Maintaining a steady supply of vegetables is a top priority for the city. Starting from XiaoNian, the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, vegetable sales have increased by a third, according to Jiang Chunqing, a vendor specialized in selling vegetables from southwest China's Yunnan province. He expects the surge in demand to continue until the Spring Festival.
Since Jan. 14, more than 20,000 metric tons of vegetables have been sold at Xinfadi Market each day, with the weighted average price of vegetables dropping 17% per kilogram on Wednesday compared to Tuesday.
To ensure the food supply, over 2,000 of the 4,500 stalls in Xinfadi Market will remain open during the upcoming Spring Festival, according to an official of the market.
