In an exclusive interview with China.org.cn on Nov. 12, Wang Chen, minister of the State Council Information Office, and minister of the State Internet Information Office, shared his views on Party General Secretary Hu Jintao's report to the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC's current publicity work, and its transparency in news reporting.

Wang believed the most striking point in Hu's report is the establishment of the Scientific Outlook on Development in addition to the Party's long-standing theoretical guidance of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the concept of Three Represents, which are all combined together under the great banner of socialism. Wang added this particular aspect of Hu's report forms an important contribution to the ongoing 18th CPC National Congress.

Meanwhile, the congress has extensively summarized the progress both Party and State have made over the past decade in the fields of economic, political, social, cultural and ecological civilization construction, said Wang. "China has risen from its previous sixth place to the world's second biggest economy. The people's livelihood and social security system have made great strides forward," he said.

Hu's report on the new arrangement of economic, political, cultural, social and ecological civilization constructions conforms better to the reality of China's social development, said Wang. "Personally, I completely support such a comprehensive arrangement. I believe our reform, opening to the outside world, and modernization undertakings will made greater progress in the future."

Speaking of the CPC's ideological publicity work, Wang stressed the following three issues.

First beckons the promotion and execution of the so-called socialist core value system which decides the current of Chinese society. "I hope that in the future we can summarize more accurate and scientific observations to put into practice and guide our people," he said.

Second on the agenda is the further development of the country's cultural undertakings, including news publicity, artistic performances, and other publications, said Wang. "More efforts have to be made to guarantee both the quantity and quality of artistic works such as films, novels and TV series."

Finally then comes the purification of the online environment, Wang said. "The creation of websites favored by youngsters is one of our work focuses. Publications which cater to lower and vulgar tastes must be blocked. We must combat Internet crime to better serve our economic development and serve the people. We must transmit healthy, beneficial and progressive information to online surfers," Wang said.

Talking about the transparency in the reporting of the CPC National Congresses, Wang cited a series of facts and figures. "As a senior Party member, I have attended the past four sessions of the CPC National Congress. This year, more than 2,700 journalists have come to Beijing to cover the 18th CPC National Congress, 1,700 of who came from overseas. That was unimaginable in the past. The journalists are provided with good service here in the Press Center and are admitted to cover the open delegate group discussions."

"I think it is a good thing that the CPC National Congress has drawn world-wide attention. It shows that our Party and our country enjoy a continuously higher position in the world," said Wang.

Wang suggested journalists give a real, objective report of China. "I hope they will introduce a developing, changing, progressing and vigorous China to the world. I think the transparency in our Party affairs and news releasing will be further strengthened in the future," said Wang.
