Taiwan universities and vocational and technical colleges can admit 2,000 students from the Chinese mainland in 2011, according to the quota disclosed by Taiwan's educational authorities Wednesday.
Universities in Taiwan can take in 1,123 mainland students while vocational and technical colleges can admit 877.
Up to 477 mainland students may study at the island's government-run higher educational institutions and another 1,523 can enroll in private ones, Taiwan's educational department said.
The number of vacancies reserved for mainland students will be 1,361 in bachelor programs, 557 in master programs and 82 in doctoral programs.
According to Taiwan authorities, the island's government-run universities can only admit mainland students who study for master or doctoral degrees while in private institutions mainland students can pursue bachelor, master or doctoral degrees.
Feng Chia University can enroll up to 74 mainland students, the highest number allowed of any of the islands' universities. While Taiwan University can admit 73 mainland students.
Quemoy University and Penghu University can enroll up to 73 and 68 mainland students respectively.
