The first domestically developed medical robot completed a specialized transoral surgery for early laryngeal cancer at the Eye and Ent Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai on Oct. 29.
Designed by Chengdu Borns, a medical robot company located in Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Sichuan province, the robot can accurately treat tumors while protecting the patient's organs to the greatest extent thanks to its unique Transoral Robotic Surgery System (TORSS).
Head and neck surgery covers the complex nerves and dense blood vessels of the human body. Any slight deviation may cause serious and irreversible damage to the patient's nerves, breathing and swallowing functions. This is also one of the most challenging surgical operations and has always been a "forbidden zone" for minimally invasive surgery.
Chengdu Borns has focused on developing the robot and its operating system for eight years, during which it works together Professor Tao Lei's team of the hospital of Fudan University.
The company's founder and CEO Li Yao said that the TORSS uses the world's first technology to not only promote the progress and development of domestic robots in head and neck surgery, but also creates a new means of minimally invasive treatment of head and neck tumors in the early stage.
In addition, Chengdu Borns has also developed its artificial intelligence surgical system for surgical robot that can realize the automation upgrade of laparoscopic surgery. The surgical robot running on the system contains 306 authorized patents. Currently, and can be widely used in clinical research and training programs.
The Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone is an important carrier for the development of the AI industry in the provincial capital of Chengdu. It provides strong supports to companies and researchers in the AI and other cutting-edge tech fields to help them make breakthroughs in key technologies.
