Human rights experts blast Amnesty report
Adjust font size:

Chinese experts on human rights studies gathered yesterday in Beijing to condemn the biased human rights report released by Amnesty International titled "People's Republic of China - The Olympic countdown - crackdown on activists threatens the Olympic legacy". The report aims to stir up problems for China's smooth hosting of the coming Beijing Olympics.

Liu Hainian, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and director of the China Society for Human Rights Studies:

"Some people in the international community are trying to attack China by condemning the government for its crackdown on the recent riots in Tibet; they totally forget that what the Dalai Lama wants most is to restore his serfdom in Tibet, which goes against the human rights of Tibetans."

Wang Sixin, a professor with the Communication University of China and director of the China Society for Human Rights Studies:

"The Amnesty International report adopts Western standards, especially that of the United States, in judging human rights; its aim is to create chaos in China during the run-up to the Beijing Olympic Games."

Yang Chengming, a professor with the Beijing Institute of Technology and director of the China Society for Human Rights Studies:

"The general conclusion of the Amnesty International report is that China's human rights conditions have not improved despite being host of the Olympic Games, instead it has got worse. For any one in the international community who has a sound understanding of China, this conclusion is clearly unacceptable and biased."

Zhang Xiaoling, a professor with China's Central Party School and director of the China Society for Human Rights Studies:

"China has made great strides in the improvement of human rights, but it's a pity that Amnesty International hasn't noticed them yet."
