For Qian Hu

First, I think CNN offer very poor coverage so don't expect me to defend them.

Second, keep trying - I have to send each message to China Daily about 12-15 times before it gets accepted. I think this is probably due to the fact that they are very busy, rather than heavily censored.

Third, I have already complimented China Daily on its apparently objective publishing of readers comments. This is highly commendable and encouraging.

Finally, if you think western people like myself will defend everything about our politics and society mindlessly you are very mistaken. As a resident in Australia, you will probably realise that critical evaluation is one of the most prized and important characteristics of western thought. EVERYTHING must be questionned, NOTHING can be accepted without detailed and critical scrutiny.

So what about my other points?

If the planes are flying in international airspace they are breaking no rules and I hope the Chinese pilots stay far enough away from them so that there are no more accidents. John

john, jbolings@aol.com
the Chinese fighter planes are small and very nimble while the American spy plane is large and slow. It is not difficult to understand that the Chinese plane was flying too close to the slow American plane. If the American plane and Chinese plane were at a safe distance from each other before the accident then, if the American plane made a move towards the Chinese plane, the quick, nimble Chinese fighter plane would have no problems avoiding the American plane. However, if the Chinese pilot was flying very close to the large, slow American plane the Chinese pilot might not have enough time to react to movement by the American plane. John

I read some of the comments posted. Do the Chinese people really believe that a slow moving survielence plane, 400 meters away from your fighter aircraft, by the other pilots admission, actually turned into it and struck it? If your fighters are that unresponsive or your pilots so poorly trained, pray you never come against a skilled U.S. fighter pilot in a state of the art combat plane. You are believing that the rabbit (your fighter) couldn't get out of the way of the turtle (our propeller plane) and tell the turtle it was his fault. Up to this day I've believed that the Chinese people were reasonably intelligent but it appears that the years of "communist conditioning" has removed the ability to "think" on your own. And...you are welcome to fly as close to the USA as the 60 mile International limit permits...that is, if you have the aircraft capable of getting there and don't fear your pilots defecting to a land that's free. Russia visits our coasts all the time, we visit theirs...We don't need the "crap" that you manufacture, we're nice that we are trying to integrate China into the modern era by allowing trade. I'd sure hate to see your turn at the Olympics boycotted as the 1980 Olympics was in the old Soviet Union. What really happened was your pilot was playing "cowboy" with his aircraft and couldn't handle it. The U.S. has pictures of him on previous flights...so close he could be seen holding his e-mail address against the cockpit window. Remember, the Chinese are NOT a FREE PEOPLE and do not have access to the other side of the story. We'll pray for your enlightenment and understanding.

Since coming to power nine weeks ago George Bush has proved himself to be both arrogant and dangerous. He has single handedly managed to aggravate the Russian government, with his handling of the spys expelled. The EU with his disgracful U-turn on the Kyoto aggreement, and is now at a stand off with China.

It hope that this incident can be settled without further loss of life and that Mr Bush will have learned something. He seems to be trying to whip up another cold war. After all war is money and with the US economy about to go into recession, war could take the mind of Americans off the that fact.

Though I am technically an American citizen I am in complete agreement with China's views on this matter.

I sincerely believe that both this incident and the most recent mentioned here concerning an additional 5 Spy Planes now reveals to us that the current administration of the US is "reckless, insecure, prone to behaving as a drunken cowboy, and generally demonstrating a complete disregard for developing good relations with China".

I am extremely regrettable of this and I as an American hereby apologize to all of China and it's citizen for my country's shocking behavior and atrocities. The current US disgusts me. I am to be in China myself in just 3 weeks, not a 100 miles from this "Plane incident" to marry my Chinese fiancee' there. At this venture-in-time I am half-considering 'asking for Chinese citizenship", as the current administration of the US makes me feel ashamed, NOT proud to be an American.

Sincerely,

Paul Casson

This is Patrick Waldron. I am teaching English in China. I was coerced out of the USA. They had waged a war of terror against me. I had refused to go to the "oil executives war" in Kuwait in desert storm. I beleive that Kuwait is a part of Iraq.

I had made many writings about my views when I lived in the USA, and I payed a heavy price for speaking my mind. My sister was brutally killed, I had my arm violently broken by the police, and I was tortured and raped at Mt. Sinai hospital in New York City. I had to endure many death threats and horrible sanctions on my economic earning capabilities.

I am sure that many criminals from different countries steal from their nations and find a safe refuge in the USA. I think it is a horrible disgusting and hipocritical nation. I do not wish to go back. I had tried to find justice for the many transgressions in the US court system, but I was turned away.

Now, I teach English in China. I didnt really want to come here. I am finding it is a good nation. But still I dont think I belong here as I am of European blood. I am amazed at how your country has developed its farming system. The people get fed. I am feeling concerned that your water problem worsens. This should be a priority.

As for spy planes, I am not sure what your nation should do. I would like to see many nations get together to destroy the USA. I do not think the beligerant people in charge of that country are ever willing to negotiate in a rational peacefull way. They are programmed by their TV sets and the ultra violent movies that come from the homosexuals in Hollywood.

You should try to settle things diplomatically with the USA if you can. I couldnt. You can tell their mindset by seeing how they made their own game of football. They turned a peacefull game into a war mindset.

I want to continue to teach English in China. Maybe other countries as well. I am also a very talented poet and musician. If you would like to publish some of my poetry or songs, let me know. I would like to share my talent with the great people here on the other side of the world. Have a nice day, Patrick Waldron

To the good people of China. , please, stop demanding an "apology" from the American administration. It isn't even clear what it is your own administration is seeking. We hear comments like "regret is a step in the right direction"..."the americans should make a meaningful gesture". Perhaps your own administration isn't sure what it wants. It certainly isn't clear to Westerners. The suggestion here, though, is that the PRC bears no responsibility whatsoever for this tragic accident. Surely the people of China can recognize the contribution of their own government, in addition to that of the US, to this incident.

Regardless...Washington must surely be getting very bored with this endless pleading, crying, whining and balling for an apology.

If its an apology you seek I can tell you a definite way of getting it. Give unrestricted private access to the US crew and the aircraft, so that an investigation can be conducted to determine who is at fault. An apology won't be forthcoming purely at the insistence of the Chinese propaganda machine. Give the US plane's black box over to American authorities for examination.

Just how childish do you think this posturing appears? Holding 24 "brave" American citizens ransom is an apalling way to conduct your country's affairs. It likely wasn't reported in any Chinese media yesterday, but the European Union has now given its support to the United States in this matter. International sympathies do not accept the Chinese handling of this matter.

And by the way, there is a clear means of ensuring that this unfortunate incident won't occur in the future. Expect to see future American reconnaisance missions in international airspace provided with a fighter plane escort! Then we'll see how close the courageous Chinese pilots dare to come.

It is terrible that a proud, courageous Chinese pilot is missing, and my heart goes out to his family and the Chinese people.

However, can anybody say "Olympics"..."WTO"? The world is watching. Stop acting like children and do the right thing. Surely it is time.
