The spirit of the builders of the two plateau highways
The two plateau highways are the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. When the PLA set out in 1950 on their mission to liberate Tibet, Mao Zedong instructed them to build roads as they advanced. So, over the next four years, a contingent of more than 100,000 PLA soldiers, engineers and local residents braved the harsh conditions and completed two highways, covering a total length of 4,360 km, thereby finally giving Tibet access to a modern road system. They created this miracle on "the roof of the world."
During the construction and maintenance of these two highways, a spirit was generated that encourages "facing both hardship and death with great courage, confronting challenges head-on, and fostering army-civilian unity and ethnic solidarity like a family."
