Geographic location

Located on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in southwest China, Chongqing borders on provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Shaanxi. Its total area is 82,400 sq km.

Chongqing 2004 - The Year in Review

General Economy

Gross domestic product (GDP)

GDP for 2004 was 266.539 billion yuan, up 12.2% from the previous year.

GDP ratio (primary, secondary and tertiary industries)

The primary industry yielded a value added of 43.132 billion yuan, 4.7% more than that of the previous year; the secondary industry, 118.124 billion yuan, a growth of 16.2%; the tertiary industry, 105.283 billion yuan, a growth of 10.4%. The proportion of the three sectors is 16.2: 44.3: 39.5.

Revenue and expenditure

Chongqing's revenue was 30.239 billion yuan, an increase of 40.5% over the previous year. Municipal expenditure was 48.727 billion yuan, an increase of 24.5%.

Consumer price index (CPI)

CPI was up 3.7% from the previous year.

Investment in fixed assets

Fixed asset investment was valued at 160.993 billion yuan, up by 26.8% from the previous year.

Major Industries

Agriculture

In 2004, Chongqing's agricultural output value totaled 61.277 million yuan, an increase of 5.2% from the previous year.

Industry

The industrial added value totaled 92.751 billion yuan, an increase of 16.9%.

High-tech

The year saw an increase of 93 high-tech enterprises, raising the total number of such enterprises to 601. The total output value from high-tech industries was 96 billion yuan, up 24.6% from 2003.

Construction

Its added value was 25.373 billion yuan, up by 13.5%.

Transportation

Freight carried by various means of transport during the year amounted to a total of 60.916 billion ton-kilometers, 36.4% up from the previous year. Passengers carried by various means of transport numbered 32.095 billion person-kilometers during the year, up 19.8%.

Postal services

The annual turnover of postal operations totaled 939 million yuan.

Telecommunications

The annual turnover of telecom services totaled 16.56 billion yuan, up by 46.8%.

Retail

The annual turnover from retail sales reached 95.5 billion yuan, an increase of 14.3% from the previous year.

Tourism

Revenue from tourism totaled 25.977 billion yuan, up by 27.4% from the 2003 figure.

Continued Effects of Market Reform

Imports & exports

The annual value of imports and exports totaled US$3.857 billion, up by 48.7% from the year before.

Economic and technological cooperation

Overseas project and labor contracts signed during the year were valued at US$148 million, 10.1% up from the previous year. Business turnover for the year totaled US$101 million, up by 14.4% from the previous year.

Foreign investment

The foreign direct investment which was materialized during the year stood at US$682 million, up by 20.4%.

Urban Construction and Management

Road transport

By the end of 2004, about 32,344 km of highways had been open to traffic, an increase of 937 km from the previous year-end. 89.3% of Chongqing's administrative villages now have access to highway transportation.

Public services

During the year, the construction of 2 sewage treatment plants was accomplished, raising daily capacity of sewage treatment by 90,000 cubic meters; 2 garbage treatment facilities were built or renovated, raising the daily capacity of rubbish disposal by 280 tons; 13 new parks were established, increasing public green area by 1,083 square meters.

Social Undertakings

Science and technology

A total of 1,768 technology contracts were signed during the year, with contractual value of 5.96 billion yuan, 7% up from the year before.

Education

There were 34 institutions of higher learning, 1,511 middle schools and 10,409 primary schools in Chongqing at the end of 2004. The number of students enrolled in postgraduate schools and institutions of higher learning during the year stood at 8,202 and 99,000 respectively.

Culture

7 new cultural and arts centers and public libraries at the county level were built; and 44 ground cultural relic preservation projects were accomplished during the year.

Public health

At the end of the year, there were 2,539 medical and health institutions staffed with a work force of 77,502 people. 32 centers for disease control and prevention were set up at the county level. 6 urban districts and counties that piloted the system of cooperative medical service raised a total fund of 48.38 million yuan. The system now covers 2.01 million, or 60.2% of, rural residents.

Sports

By the end of 2004, there were 17,351 sports facilities which cover a total area of 20.49 million square meters. The sports lottery reaped sales of 145 million yuan, raising public welfare funds of 50.83 million yuan.

Welfare and aid

A relief fund of 51.83 million was distributed to assist 440,000 people from 180,000 families living in absolute poverty. A rural minimum living guarantee system was primarily established in 4 districts, distributing minimum living allowances of 2.18 million yuan during the year.

Poverty relief

A total of 123,600 people were relocated during the year. 152,000 people began to have enough to eat and wear, reducing the population in absolute poverty to 653,000. 218,000 rural residents began to have easier access to drinking water.

Population, Employment, Social Security and Living Standards

Population

The year 2004 saw a birth rate of 9.45‰. The natural growth rate of the population stood at 2.85‰. At the end of the year, the total population with registered household stood at 31.442 million.

Employment

The employed population at the end of 2004 stood at 17.156 million. About 186,700 new jobs were created during the year.

Registered unemployment rate

The registered urban unemployment rate was 4.1%.

Social security

In 2004, insurance plans for unemployment and endowments covered a population of 1.93 million and 2.84 million respectively. About 700,000 people received minimum living allowance from the government, which totaled 649 million yuan.

Residents' income

The disposable income of urban residents was 9,221 yuan per capita, up by 9.8% from 2003. Rural residents' per capita net income was 2,535 yuan, up 6.9%.

Residents' consumption

Urban residents' per capita expenditure was 7,973 yuan, up by 12.0% from the previous year.

Geography and Natural Conditions

Climate

Chongqing is located in the sub-tropical climate zone. Its average annual temperature is around 18℃. It has a total annual sunshine time of 1,000-1200 hours. The annual rainfall averages 1,000–1,400 mm.

Natural resources

It has crisscrossing rivers and the water resources can generate 7.5 million kw of power. Chongqing has one of the three largest resources of mineral water in China. It has 38 kinds of mineral deposits, including coal, natural gas, strontium, aluminum oxide, manganese, limestone, marble, spar, gypsum, quartz, mercury, and rock salt. Chongqing leads China and ranks second in the world in deposits of strontium.

Chongqing's weather is changeable, and the area has many species of plants and animals.

In addition, Chongqing has vast rural areas with large populations - a great potential for the development of agriculture. The cost of labor is comparatively low.

Tourism resources

Chongqing is proud of its tourism resources, with mountains, rivers, forests, springs, waterfalls, gorges, and caves all displaying the majesty, the fantasy, the danger, and the seclusion of nature. The famous tourist attractions include the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River; the night view of the City of Mountains; the rock carvings at Dazu, a World Cultural Heritages site; the Lotus Cave near the Four-Sided Mountains; and Tiankeng (Heavenly Pit) and Difeng (Earthly Rift Valley), two rare geological spectacles at Fengjie.
