China calls for more efforts in rural school flu control

China's Ministry of Education Wednesday called for strengthened efforts in A/H1N1 flu prevention and control in rural schools to avoid outbreaks.
A notice jointly released by the ministries of education and health, said local medical institutions and schools should be familiar with flu prevention and control measures and school doctors should receive prevention technique training.
"The prevention and control work should cover all rural schools," it said, adding special attention should be given to boarding schools.
With the flu situation becoming more serious, there were reports of Chinese students' deaths of A/H1N1 flu. The proportion of A/H1N1 flu also increased to account for 90 percent of all flu cases reported in the past weeks.
Liang Wannian, director of the health ministry's emergency response office, said schools were still the main venue for prevention.
The ministries asked schools to conduct daily temperature taking and ensure adequate ventilation by opening classroom windows at intervals.
The Chinese mainland reported 125 deaths from the A/H1N1 influenza in the week from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, nearly 65 percent of those reported in the whole month of November, said the health ministry.
The total number of confirmed cases of A/H1N1 flu in the mainland had topped 100,000 and 31.61 million people had been vaccinated as of Wednesday, it said.
