People in Beijing spend 38 minutes on average to get to work under normal traffic conditions, the longest among 50 mainland cities, according to a report released by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) last week, Xinhua reports. Shanghai and Guangzhou ranked second, both with 36 minutes of commuting time on average. Typical commuting time in Beijing taking into account traffic congestion was 52 minutes.
Due to the rapidly increasing number of cars, the Beijing municipal government now allocates car license plates to new car buyers through a lottery system, aiming to restrict the increase in new cars to 240,000 a year.
Beijing also raised downtown parking fees and has been closely monitoring cars parked in incorrect places since April, forcing many car owners who cannot find a cheap parking space to commute by public transport.
The measures are said to have had some effect, as some car owners have said that congestion has eased a little.
Last year, the CAS report found Beijingers spent an average of 52 minutes on the way to work, also leading the list.
