According to a study released Monday by the Air Transport Rating Agency (ATRA), Air France-KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa are the safest airlines in Europe, AFP reported.

The safest US-based airlines are AMR Corporation, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways, while the safest Asian carrier is Japan Airlines.

In order to determine the ratings, which are the first of their kind, ATRA examined publicly available information on 15 criteria.

The agency explained that, although accident figures are an important factor in terms of understanding airline safety, other factors, such as technical, human, organizational and external elements are also important considerations.
