A farmer in China's Henan province held a funeral for his dairy cattle in protest of local corruption, Dahe.cn reported. The farmer said his town government withheld provincial subsidies that he needed to operate his business, and that his cattle starved to death as a result. |
According to an online blog post, the farmer said the Henan provincial government issued 600,000 yuan in supporting funds for his 230 dairy cattle, but the money was withheld and used by the Zhaolin Town government in Luohe prefecture. |
After several rounds of negotiations, the town government gave him back 300,000 yuan. Due to the incident, the man claimed the town government forced his dairy farm to shut down numerous times in the last ten years, resulting in the deaths of over 70 cattle and the deterioration of over 40 tons of milk. |
The funeral was solemn. In a wooden shed usually intended for dead people, the farmer pasted a sign which said "I starved to death" on a dummy dairy cow, and adorned the space with sacrificial offerings and white candles. |
Furthermore, former head of the town government, surnamed Jiao, sold the farmer's land before his rental contract expired for 1,100,000 yuan. However, estimates say the land and farm have a combined worth over more than 6 million yuan.
