Steve Jobs, who died at 56 on Oct. 5, 2011, was the No. 1 name of the year, according to the Global Language Monitor. Citations for Jobs topped those for Osama bin-Laden and Seal Team by more than 30 per cent.
Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco on Feb. 24, 1955, and adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs of Mountain View, California. In 1974, Jobs took a job at videogame company Atari Inc. but resigned after a few months to travel to India. In 1975, Jobs and his high school friend Steve Wozniak built a prototype computer in the garage of Jobs' parents. In 1976, Jobs and Wozniak co-founded Apple Computer to sell their machines, starting with the Apple I. In 1986, Jobs bought the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd, the company owned by Star Wars director George Lucas, and founded what would become Pixar Animation Studios.
In 1997, Jobs became Apple's interim chief executive. In 1998, the iMac was launched, a self-contained computer and monitor. The first iPod went on sale in October 2001 and proved a huge success. The iTunes music store was launched in April 2003. In 2007, the first iPhone launched, And Jobs decided to drop the computer part of Apple's name. The iPad was launched in April 2010 and three million units were sold in 80 days. Nearly 15 million iPads were sold worldwide by the end of the year. Apple's annual sales reach US$65 billion -- a huge rise from US$8 billion in 2000. In 2011, Apple continued to roll out new products to great demand including the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4.
In 2004, Jobs announced that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer and he had a liver transplant in 2009. In January, he took medical leave, before resigning as CEO in August and handing over his duties to Tim Cook. He introduced the colorful iMac computer, the iPod and the iPhone to the world. His death came just a day after Apple unveiled its latest iPhone 4S model. Apple -- whose market value is estimated at US$351 billion -- is now the world's most valuable technology company. As the face of Apple, Jobs represented its dedication to high-end technology and fashionable design.
