More than 100 volunteers took to the streets Saturday in Beijing, wearing T-shirts that bear the words "Say No to Second-hand Smoke" in an effort to bring awareness to the public about the harm of second-hand smoking.
According to latest report by Chinese Association on Tobacco Control (CATC), China now has over 300 million smokers, and over 740 million others are affected by second-hand smoke. More than 1.2 million die of smoking-related diseases every year.
"Smoking and second-hand smoke has become one of the biggest threats to public health," said Wang Haijing, vice chairman of the Red Cross Society of China.
RCSC initiated Saturday's public campaign together with CATC.
"Women and children are top victims of second-hand smoke, but over 80 percent of them lack courage to confront the smokers. They either go with it or just leave," said Xu Guihua, deputy vice-chairman of CATC.
A previous study has found that women who live with smokers are six times more likely to suffer from lung cancer.
Tobacco industry interference is the theme of this year's World No Tobacco Day, which takes place on May 31.
