The purpose of this opinion is simply and sincerely to wish all my Chinese friends and colleagues a Happy National Day for October first. China does indeed have much to celebrate and be thankful for. No country in human history has achieved as much in such a short period of time. This is a moment to celebrate these successes and to express gratitude to the many people who have worked so hard and sacrificed so much to make it happen.
In addition to being justly proud of China's many achievements, this is also a time for unity. It is unity of purpose, a common 'China Dream' which will enable China to continue its success in future decades.
It is also a time to realize that that each succeeding generation must continue to sacrifice and meet the particular challenges of its day just as generations before have done.
Finally, October is a time of change and possibility, a time to breathe deeply and freshen up as we get ready to take on whatever challenges lay in store.
Looking optimistically to the future of China and the world, I like the October observation of American author Sarah Guillory who wrote in Reclaimed:
"October had tremendous possibility. The summer's oppressive heat was a distant memory, and the golden leaves promised a world full of beautiful adventures. They made me believe in miracles."
