Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson lost his gamble against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, losing both the Champions League semifinal berth and starter Wayne Rooney's fitness.
The English striker, who had been supposed to be out for up to three weeks after hurting his right ankle in the first leg at Bayern a week ago, re-injured it on Wednesday.
Bayern, who trailed 3-0 but came back with two goals at Manchester, made the Champions League final four on away goals with a 4-4 aggregate score though losing 3-2 in the return leg.
Now Rooney is in doubt for Sunday's Premier League match against Blackburn.
"I don't think he will be in contention on Sunday," Ferguson said. "But he should be available the week after."
"It's similar to what he had last week. It's a burst blood vessel just below the ankle joint. He won't be out for too long," he added.
Without Rooney, the United, with only five league matches left including next week's derby against Manchester City, lost 2-1 to Chelsea and was overtaken by its opponent at the top of the Premier League.
