Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian got his season off to a good start by claiming the indoor 60m victory in a stadium-record 6.52 seconds on Wednesday at the Grand Prix held in the Athlone Institution of Technology in Ireland.
Cheered by overseas Chinese students, Su finished first in the group clocking 6.54, 0.03 seconds faster than the stadium record, and lowered his own record in the final to 6.52 seconds to claim the championship later on the same day.
Although Su did not meet his coach's expectation of 6.48 seconds, this result is better than his season debut last year and the 29-year-old said he was satisfied with his performance after the winter training.
Japan's Kamakawi Takuna was the runner-up with a personal best record of 6.58 seconds. Confidence Lawson of Great Britain finished third in 6.70 seconds.
