Team USA won the women's 400m hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday with a new world record but suffered setback at the sprint races as Canada's Andre De Grasse claimed the men's 200m gold medal.

U.S. runner Sydney McLaughlin finished the women's race in 51.46 seconds, 0.44 seconds faster than the previous world record set by herself on June 27. Her compatriot Dalilah Muhammad won the silver with a personal best of 51.58, also bettering the previous world record of 51.90. Femke Bol of the Netherlands took the bronze in 52.03.

Canada's De Grasse claimed the men's 200m gold medal, adding to his bronze medal in the 100m. Kenneth Bednarek of the United States took the silver in a personal best of 19.68, with Noah Lyles, the 2019 world champion, having to settle for the bronze in 19.74.

Poland showed its dominance in the Olympic hammer throws as Wojciech Nowicki clinched the men's gold medal after his compatriot Anita Wlodarczyk won the women's competition one day earlier.

All five legitimate attempts by Nowicki were above 80 meters, including a personal best of 82.52 meters that lifted him from the bronze medal in Rio 2016 to the highest podium at Tokyo 2020.

Norwegian Eivind Henriksen won the silver with an 81.58m throw on his fifth attempt, while Nowicki's teammate Pawel Fajdek, a four-time world champion, recorded 81.53m for bronze.

In the men's 800m, Emmanuel Korir crossed the finish line at 1:45.06 to win Kenya's fourth gold medal in a row in this event at the Olympic Games after victories in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Ferguson Rotich finished second with 1:45.23 to complete a Kenyan 1-2 ahead of Patryk Dobek of Poland, who won the bronze with 1:45.39.

Peruth Chemutai of Uganda won the women's 3000m steeplechase gold with 9:01.45 ahead of the 9:04.79 recorded by Courtney Frerichs of the United States. Hyvin Kiyeng of Kenya took the bronze with 9:05.39.

Chinese veteran Xie Wenjun failed to qualify for the men's 110m hurdles final after clocking 13.58 seconds in the semifinal. Chinese Zheng Nilina ranked 10th after the first day of competition in the women's heptathlon.
