Tokyo has won the right to host the 2025 world athletics championships after beating three rivals of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, Poland's Silesia and Singapore, it was announced on Thursday.
World Athletics, the sport's world governing body, said in a statement that Tokyo, which hosted the 1991 edition, scored the highest of the four candidates in the bid evaluation.
"Within an extremely strong field of candidates to host the world athletics championships 2025, Tokyo offered a compelling bid," said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.
The 18th world athletics championships begin in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, while Budapest in Hungary will host the 2023 event.
World Athletics Council also selected two hosts for the next two editions of the world cross country championships. The next two editions will be held in Medulin and Pula of Croatia (2024) and Tallahassee, the United States (2026).
