Luka Modric became the oldest player ever to represent Real Madrid when he played in their 2-1 win away to Celta Vigo on Saturday night.
The Croatian international, who is 39 years and 40 days old, overtook the legendary Hungarian Ferenc Puskas to claim the honor.
In his 547th appearance since joining from Tottenham in 2012, Modric was decisive in the game, giving the assist that allowed Vinicius Jr to score the winning goal with the match level at 1-1 after Williot Swedberg's 51st-minute goal had canceled out Kylian Mbappe's first half opener for Madrid.
"It's a pleasure to coach Modric, to work with him. Everything he's been able to achieve and is achieving, he deserves," commented coach Carlo Ancelotti after the game.
The win puts Real Madrid level on points with FC Barcelona, who play Sevilla on Sunday, ahead of this season's first 'Clasico' between the two historic rivals in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium next weekend.
