West Ham United has published a statement saying its "thoughts and prayers" are with Michail Antonio and confirmed he was in a stable condition after the striker suffered a serious car accident on Saturday.
Photos showed the 34-year-old striker's car in a wrecked condition after it appeared to have crashed into a tree, and there are press reports that Antonio needed to be airlifted to hospital.
"West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area. Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital," informed the club.
This second statement updated an earlier one which had raised fears that the forward's life could be in danger as it explained he had "been involved in a road traffic accident."
"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michail, his family and friends at this time," said the club, adding it would "issue an update in due course."
The Jamaican international joined West Ham from Nottingham Forest in 2015.
West Ham will play Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.
