Kevin Alvarez and Alejandro Zendejas scored either side of halftime as Club America recovered from a goal down to secure a 2-1 home win over Monterrey in the first leg of the Liga MX Apertura final on Thursday.
Former Real Madrid attacking midfielder Sergio Canales put the visitor ahead in the 35th minute when he intercepted an errant defensive pass before firing an unstoppable 30-yard drive into the top-left corner.
Alvarez equalized by slotting home from the edge of the six-yard box following a counterattack in the 39th minute.
America took the lead shortly after halftime through Zendejas, who sent a deft finish into the far corner after combining with Alvaro Fidalgo.
The result means America needs only to draw Sunday's decisive second leg in Monterrey to clinch its 16th top-flight title and third in succession. Monterrey is aiming for its sixth league triumph.
