South Korea retains the top spot in the world with the fastest Internet average connection speed, according to a latest report.

Akamai, the largest CDN (Content Delivery Network) service provider, released its quarterly report "The State of the Internet" early this month for the third quarter of 2011.

The data shows the global average Internet speed has increased 39 percent year-on-year, with an average connection speed up to 2.7Mbps.

According to the report, South Korea maintains No.1 with the fastest average connection speed of 16.7Mbps and Hong Kong and Japan ranked No.2 and No. 3.

Although the Chinese mainland showed a high increase of 43 percent compared to the previous year, its average connection speed was 1.4Mbps, which is below the worldwide average of 2.7Mbps and made it rank only 90 of the overall ranking.

The data presented by Akamai was collected during the third quarter of 2011 through the agency's globally deployed server network and includes all countries/regions that had more than 25,000 unique IP addresses make requests for content to Akamai during the quarter.
