Carnival of Cultures, Berlin, Germany |
Location: Berlin, Germany
Time: In May for four days
The Carnival of Cultures, which started in 1996, has become the most popular large event in Berlin. Celebrated in the spring, this annual event attracts over 3 million Germans and 500,000 foreign visitors, and the numbers are increasing yearly. The unique foods in various cooking styles, the beautiful dances with music, and the bustling parades show off the cultures of more than 80 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.
In 2011, about 4,700 professional and non-professional performers of all age groups took part in the parade, accompanied by colorfully decorated floats. The Xylophone performance brings in the African style, natural and unadorned; the long Swiss alphorns show the characters of Switzerland; and the passionate dances from Brazil enhance everyone's enthusiasms. A total of 900 artists performed during the four-day street festival.
