Liugong Island is a small island located at the mouth of Weihai Bay, on the northeastern edge of Shandong Peninsula. The island enjoys the reputation of 'a fairy isle on the sea' for its natural beauty and pleasant climate. It takes 20 minutes to arrive at the island from the Weihai downtown pier by ferry.
The island covers an area of 3.15 square kilometers (315 hectares), with a maximum length of 4.08 kilometers (2.54 miles) (in east-western direction) and a maximum width of 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles). The coastline has a total length of 14.95 kilometers (9.29 miles). More than half the of island's area is covered by forest, predominantly consisting of black pine trees. To protect the forest, the island was named a national forestry park in 1985.
Due to its important strategic location, Liugong Island is a natural defense for Weihai. It is known as the "birthplace of China's first modern navy".
