California Institute of Technology, also known as Caltech, was first founded as a preparatory and vocational school by Amos G. Throop in 1891. It has six academic divisions with strong emphases on science and engineering. Despite its small size, 31 Caltech alumni and faculty have won the Nobel Prize and 66 have won the National Medal of Science or Technology. In addition, there are 109 faculty members who have been elected to the National Academies.
