Haikou, Shenzhen and Karamay were named the top three cities in China for green development in 2013, according to the latest China's Green Development Index Report, released Sept. 22.
This year's report measures 100 cities across the country for their green growth rate using three main indexes and 57 specific indicators.
The three main indexes are the degree of green economic growth, the potential of natural resources and the environment, and the support of government policies.
The 57 specific indicators include energy consumption per unit of GDP, CO2 emissions per capita, the treatment rate of urban sewage, forest coverage rate, and the number of sudden environmental accidents.
Besides the cities' green development, the report also surveyed the urban residents' attitude towards green growth in the city they live.
The results show that the residents of Karamay, Xiamen, Xining, Yinchuan, Haikou, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Qingdao, Suzhou and Ningbo were more satisfied about their lives than people in other Chinese cities. Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai ranked low on the satisfaction list.
China's Green Development Index Report has been published annually since 2010, and is jointly produced by the National Bureau of Statistics, Beijing Normal University, and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics.
