Professional media research organization The World Media Lab published its ranking of the world's top 500 media companies in New York on Dec. 25, 2013.
The ranking, the first of its kind, was based on the companies' business revenues in 2012, involving all the traditional media industries such as television, broadcasting, movies, newspapers, periodicals, books, satellite communication and media services, covering a total of 3,000 media groups from 50 countries and regions.
The average revenue of those featured in the top 500 reached US$1.86 billion, and the list's threshold stood at US$5.7 million.
Among the top 10, eight companies were from the United States. Comcast Corp. was the biggest winner, with a business revenue of US$62.57 billion, followed by The Walt Disney Co. and Vivendi SA, with business revenues of US$42.28 billion and US$38.27 billion respectively.
The World Media Lab is part of the World Entrepreneur Group (iCEO.COM), established by Nobel economics laureate Robert Mundell in 2004.
