# Fur skiing
Place: Altay, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
In 2015, an ancient rock painting depicting hunters on fur skis was discovered in Altay Prefecture. Dating back about 12,000 years, it is one of the earliest known depictions of skiing.
Today, local herders still preserve this traditional method of getting around, using skis made of pine wood, their undersides covered in horsehair. Altay attracts skiing enthusiasts from around the world with its vast slopes blanketed in natural powder snow, which is highly prized by skiers.
