- Location: Wutai County, Shanxi Province
Located in Foguang New Village, 30 km from Wutai County, Shanxi Province, Foguang Temple (佛光寺) was established in the reign of Emperor Xiaowen (471 - 499) in the Northern Wei dynasty. The major hall of the temple is the Great East Hall, built in 857 AD of the Tang Dynasty.
The Great East Hall is the third oldest wooden building in China after the main hall of Nanchan Temple, and the main hall of the Five Dragons Temple. There are 35 colorful Tang Dynasty sculptures inside the hall. There are also wall murals, which depict various Buddhist stories. Furthermore, Zushi Pagoda is located on the south side of the Eastern Hall, and it is the sole example of such a pagoda built during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
