Chinese peacekeepers save starving orphans

On Sunday, the Chinese peacekeepers in Haiti received a letter calling for help. An orphanage had run out of food and water, and the kids there were facing starvation.
This orphanage has a history of 50 years. Currently, 42 kids, from 8-months to 18-years, live here. The sudden earthquake damaged buildings and cut off water and power supplies. Food is also running out. With all odds seemingly going against the children, the two elderly women running the facility remembered a team of Chinese peacekeepers who paid them a visit last month. So they decided to plead for help.
Chinese peacekeeper Wang Xueyan said, "Our first reaction after receiving the letter was to come here to check if all the children were all right."
The children sang songs for the peacekeepers who came to the orphanage last month. Zhao Huayu was leading the team while Zhong Jianqin recorded the visit on tape. The two Chinese peacekeepers were killed when the earthquake struck.
Chinese peacekeeper Wang Liqiang said, "The next day when we were about to leave, the team leader told us to come back each month because the children here needed us. Zhong Jianqin told me in private that he would like to join us when we return because he liked the kids."
When the peacekeepers returned, the team brought food and water, but keep the grievous message to themselves.
Chinese peacekeeper Liu Kun said, "We bought rice, cooking oil, and bread with our own money. These children have to be protected from starvation."
The peacekeepers say it's their responsibility to ensure the children's well-being... and the smiles on the kids' faces were the best reward.
