China has won the first gold medal of the 2011 FINA World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai, with divers Wu Minxia and He Zi claiming the women's 3-meter synchronized springboard title.
Wu Mingxia and He Zi led after each round of the five-dive final and increased their lead after each round.
They finished the competition with a total of 356.40 points, good enough to outdistance divers from Canada and Australia who earned silver the bronze.
There was some doubt if He Zi was able to compete after she was injured training for the world championships. Thanks to some lengthy treatment she was deemed fit enough to compete, and came through in impressive fashion.
