The gown worn by Audrey Hepburn on the night she won her best actress Oscar in 1954, could fetch up to 60,000 pounds sterling at the auction in London.

The ivory lace dress was also worn by the star in one of her best known movies, "Roman Holiday."

It's not clear what happened to the dress after the Academy Awards, but Hepburn at some point gave it to her mother, Ella van Heemstra.

Kerry Taylor, owner of Kerry Taylor Auctions, said: "Last summer I got a telephone call from America from someone who told me that they had the white lace dress that had been worn in 'Roman Holiday' by Audrey Hepburn in 1952, and they sent me pictures and I checked out the lace and it matched exactly. The story behind it is that their family was very good friends with Audrey's mother Countess Ella van Heemstra, who had gone to live in America in the 60s for a short time. When she was leaving and returning to Europe she gave away lots of things she just didn't want to take back with her, including the dress," explained Taylor.

Also up for auction are two dresses worn by actress Elizabeth Taylor.

One is a gold silk Balenciaga dress, which is expected to fetch 40,000 to 60,000 pounds.

Kerry Taylor said: "So the gold silk dress is a very important dress. It's the sari gown and it was designed by Cristobal Balenciaga, who is the leading designer in designer in Paris at that moment, 1964 - it's the year that the Burtons got married and she's photographed wearing this holding the arm of Richard (Burton) in Paris at some wonderful gala event."

Also included in the auction is a dress worn by the late Amy Winehouse.

The short chiffon dress, designed by Thai based designer Disaya, was worn by the singer for the cover of her "Back to Black" album.

The auction will be held by Kerry Taylor Auctions on Tuesday November 29th at La Galleria on Pall Mall, London.
