Ever since the show's beginning in 1983, Chinese families have enjoyed gathering to watch the professional singing, dancing, comedy and magic on Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve. But for this 30th anniversary show, some of the performances will come from grassroots artists.
As usual, popular attention this time of year is focused on the creative and organizing process behind the gala program. This year, the show will be divided into 4 parts: this year's zodiac animal the dragon; then families and kinship; 30 years of highlights; and the whole nation as a big family.
Folk dive Song Zuying's song "Say Father and Mother Again" will appear in the family and kinship part. This Dragon year gala will be the 21st appearance for the folk singer.
Veteran singer Jiang Dawei has taken part the Spring Festival Galas for many years. This time he will perform his piece "Missing Home Town" in the "big family" segment.
And for this year, not only will the brightest stars shine, but also some talented grassroots artists will perform. Gala organizers have created a variety show called "I want to attend the spring festival gala," which consists of a series of contests that award people by allowing them to take part in the gala.
Chinese-American dancer Isaac Hou, who is famous for his crystal ball dance, is the first person chosen to participate in the dragon year gala. His skilful dance with the crystal ball has also gained a huge fan base from the internet.
