Countries around the world are celebrating Earth Day, which was designated to raise awareness about environmental issues. Take a look at what Beijing residents are doing to promote green lifestyles.
One person's trash is another person's treasure. It's a saying that Jin Luning lives by. Instead of letting garbage go to waste, Jin and her daughters make it into art.

Jin said, "My house is full of things we've already used, like old milk cartons. Making new things out of useless items is a great way to protect the environment and teach children new skills."
Jin's innovative approach toward using garbage reflects a growing movement among Beijing residents.
As the city battles serious environmental problems this Earth Day, residents are fighting back by going green.
Across town it's the same idea on a commercial scale. At NLGX Design Store, shoppers check out bags made from recycled newspapers. NLGX co-founder Michel Sutyadi says the popularity of the bags reflects people's desire to look good without hurting the environment in the process.
He said, "Our bags are environmentally friendly, so you buy them and you feel good about them. It's obvious they are made from newspaper and it's not just a pattern printed on them. They also look fashionable and stylish to accompany your outfit and the apparel you're wearing."
More people are starting to care about protecting the Earth. It's a joint effort and an important mission.
While individuals making lifestyle adjustments may seem like a small way to tackle the country's big environmental problems, experts say it can make all the difference.
Ning Zuomei, Director of China Green Student Forum, said, "When individuals take action themselves, it sets an example for others around them. By leading a green lifestyle, people can raise awareness about important environmental issues."
So as going green continues to catch on in China, the hope now is that the example set by some will become a standard for all to live by.
