As the world number one and the overwhelming women’s favorite, Serena Williams was knocked out in the 4th round by Ana Ivanovic. No small feat at all, as the American was on a 25 match winning streak.
We join things on match point on Serena’s serve. Ivanovic getting a little lucky with that one just going over. But her next shot is into the net. Groans from the crowd who clearly want to see the under-dog win this one.
But they didn’t have to wait long. Another match point in the next game. And this time she takes it. Williams hitting long. A stunning victory which no-one saw coming.
The world number one revealing afterwards, that she’d been struggling with a back injury.
"Well, I guess the secret is out, but I obviously wasn’t hitting the way I normally would hit and wasn’t moving the way I normally would move and making a lot of errors that I normally would not make and I haven’t made in a couple of years. But it’s okay. You know, I feel like I know for a fact I can play so much better than what I did today, so with that, knowing that, I’m not disappointed or anything. I just know that I can play ten times better than what I did today." Serena Williams said.
"It’s amazing. I mean, this victory means so much to me. And, you know, I worked so hard and all the hard work, you know, it’s paying off." Ann Ivanovic said.
