Thai cabinet on Sunday approved imposition of emergency law in five provinces in northeast area, which will put 22 provinces under the law.
Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn a crackdown on "red- shirts" will continue despite their plea for UN-mediated talks.
Sunday afternoon, the government announced abandonment of a planned curfew in Bangkok area as there were no immediate necessary.
The five provinces are Ubon Ratchathani, Mahasarakham, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon and Nong Bua Lampu.
Earlier, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has declared emergency in 17 provinces, including five in northeast area, the stronghold of the anti-government "red-shirt" movement.
Meanwhile, the cabinet also approves a two-day holidays from Monday in Bangkok.
