China calls to protect women from armed conflicts

A Chinese UN envoy on Tuesday called on the international community to commit to the preventive diplomacy in a bid to protect women from armed conflicts.
Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, told the Security Council that to fully exert women's role on peace and security can be of great significance to preventing and reducing conflicts.
"In order to prevent the conflicts from the very beginning and protect women's rights, the international community should develop preventive diplomacy and resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiation," Wang told the meeting marking the 10th anniversary of the landmark resolution on women and peace and security.
Adopted on Oct. 31, 2000, Resolution 1325 marked the culmination of years of concerted appeals and efforts, especially by civil society and women's organizations, to draw attention to and seek action to reverse the egregious and inhumane treatment of women and girls, the denial of their human rights and their exclusion from decision-making in situations of armed conflict.
Wang said Resolution 1325 laid the basis of cooperation for the international community on helping countries in the middle of and after armed conflicts.
China supports the UN secretary-general in appointing more women as special representatives to take the responsibility of political mediation, Wang said.
He added that the government of the country involved in armed conflicts should bear the primary responsibility of protecting its women.
"China condemns the acts of using sexual violence as a means of war and supports the United Nations in providing necessary assistance to the victims of sexual violence," he said.
Wang urged countries involved in armed conflicts to grant women a voice and rights of decision-making in post-conflict construction, providing them with job opportunities.
Besides the Security Council, the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Human Rights Council, UN Women and other organs can also play their respective roles on the issue, so as to form a joint force, Wang added.
