Syria's main opposition group in exile the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) confirmed on Monday its participation in the Geneva II peace conference shortly after UN withdrew its invitation to Iran for the meeting.
The opposition said in a statement that "the Syrian Coalition welcomes the decision of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to withdraw the invitation extended to Iran, given that Iran has not met the preconditions of participation in Geneva II conference."
"The National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces confirms its participation in the Geneva II conference aiming to achieve a political transition, starting with forming a transitional governing committee with full executive power on all the state's institutions, including the army, intelligence and security forces," the statement read.
Earlier on Monday, SNC spokesman Louay Safi said that it suspends the participation of the peace conference to be held in Switzerland on Wednesday unless UN rescinds its invitation to Iran or Iran accepts the Geneva I communique.?
