Amateur player Mitchell Travis shocked world number six Marco Fu 6-5 in the first round of the UK Championship here on Friday.
The 21-year-old Travis, one of seven amateurs handed entry into this event, scored one of the biggest shocks in the history of the tournament.
Fu has been in the form of his life this season, winning the Australian Goldfields Open and reaching the final of the International Championship. And he led 2-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 during the match, his top break 65, but could not shake off gritty Travis.
The Sheffiled cueman won the tenth frame, then made a 43 early in the decider. Fu got back into the frame and trailed 37-49 on the colors. But Travis fluked a snooker, then potted yellow, green and brown for victory.
Travis said: "It's the biggest win of my life. Before the match I knew I had nothing to lose. I came here as a rank outsider and thought as long as I don't make myself look like a muppet, I'll enjoy it."
Robert Milkins beat German Patrick Einsle 6-3 while Mark Davis also secured his place in the second round with a 6-2 win over Finland's Robin Hull.
Ricky Walden whitewashed Cao Xinlong 6-0. Endi
