Energy law to focus on unified management

The draft of the country's first energy law will highlight "unified administration" of the sector, but stop short of spelling out the establishment of an energy ministry, a key drafter said on Friday.

Meteorologists say a severe drought is hitting parts of China's northwest and is likely to last till spring, given the higher-than-normal temperatures and inadequate rainfall this year.

Lack of Funding Causes Dilemma for Nature Reserves

China's nature reserves are under-funded and nearly self-supporting, says the State Forestry Administration. Less than 200 million yuan is given to the reserves from government. While developed countries get an average of US$2,058 for each square km and developing countries get US$157, China only receives US$52.7 per square km. With such a meager amount to work with, protection and research of wild animals in these areas is suffering.

South China Tiger Could Be Extinct

The south China tigers, a species native to that area could be extinct in the wild, experts have warned. A program to preserve the fiber cells of the tiger has started and the tiger will be cloned using living cells once the technology is mature.

UNCCC: China Slashes Greenhouse Gases

A report released this week at the UN Climate Change Conference (UNCCC) in Nairobi shows action being taken by China and Brazil will result in greenhouse gas emissions being cut to levels comparable with what the US is projected to do under its voluntary target by 2010 and equal to nearly 40 percent of what the EU will do by the same year.

China Calls for Deadline for Post-Kyoto Talks

China urged a conclusion of talks yesterday on further reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by industrialized countries, which according to the Kyoto Protocol, are obliged to cut their emissions by 5.2 percent between 2008 and 2012 from their 1990 levels.

Official Claims Beijing Is Not An 'Acid Rain Zone'

A local environmental protection official has contradicted official reports that Beijing is plagued by acid rain. He cited figures showing that the ratio of acid rain in Beijing during the July-August period this year was just 5.9 percent.

Drought has hit wide areas of east and south China and will likely continue in the weeks to come.

Shrinkage of Glaciers in West China Continues

Around 82 percent of the glaciers in west China have been shrinking in the past 50 years as the temperature rose by 0.2 degrees Celsius per 10 years, Chinese scientists have found.
