The World Bank issued its annual 2011 World Development Report Monday in Washington, China News reported. The report showed that more than 1.5 billion people, or one in four people worldwide, live in fragile and conflict-affected states or in countries with very high levels of criminal violence. |
The report focuses on the theme of "Conflict, Security and Development", examining causes and dynamics of violent conflicts which hinder economic growth, political reform and overall security. |
The study illustrates that on average, countries that experienced major violence over the period from 1981 to 2005 have a poverty rate 21 percentage points higher than countries that saw no violence. |
It also emphasizes that violent conflict not only holds back economic development in the originating country, but also causes severe losses to the global market.
