Located at the northwestern base of Mount Fuji, Japan, Aokigahara, also known as the Suicide Forest, is the most popular suicide spot in Japan. After a novel which featured a young lover committing suicide in the forest was published in 1961, about 50 to 100 suicides have occurred every year in the forest despite numerous warning signs posted in Japanese and English. In 2004, 108 people committed suicide there. In 2010, 247 people attempted suicide in the forest, 54 of whom successfully completed the act.
