Speaking at a news conference at the Wells Fargo Center, Iverson was emotional, talking about his career and those close to him. |
In a touching and emotional press conference on October 30, Allen Iverson made an announcement that many people had expected for several years: he was officially finished as an NBA player.
"I gave everything I had to basketball and the passion is still there," he said, "the desire to play is just not. I just feel good that I'm happy with the decision I'm making. It was a great ride," he said.
Iverson hadn't played in the NBA since 2010.
Iverson, nicknamed "The Answer," was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft and played 10 seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. He won NBA MVP in the 2000-01 season, in which he led Philadelphia to its first NBA Finals appearance since 1983. With 19,931 points and with 4,385 assists, he is one of the most important players in the franchise's history.
