Located about 2.4 kilometers offshore from San Francisco, Alcatraz was a military fortification, a military prison and since 1972 has been a beautiful national recreation area, with amazing scenery. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. It is surrounded by beautiful sea, and hosts a variety of birds and other animal species as well as a number of landmarks, including the Main Cellhouse, Library, Lighthouse and the ruins of the Warden's House.
