The European sovereign debt crisis has occupied the media spotlight for almost the whole of 2011. The crisis spread from Greece to Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Spain and other eurozone countries, leaving Europeans tired and disillusioned with the on-going saga. The continuing crisis has resulted in the resignation of a number of experienced prime ministers, including Italy's Silvio Berlusconi, Ireland's Brian Cowen, Greece's George Papandreou and Portugal's Jose Socrates.
