Republic of South Sudan declared its independence on July 9 and became the 193rd member state of the United Nations. Salva Kiir Mayardit took office as president of the new country. The independence of South Sudan from Sudan came as a result of the January referendum held under the terms of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended the decades-long civil war between the North and the South.
