Dominique Strauss-Kahn's sex scandal

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), was arrested in New York on May 14 accused of a sex attack on a hotel maid. He announced that he would resign with immediate effect on May 18. The alleged victim later admitted that she lied to a grand jury about the events and Strauss-Kahn was released from house arrest on July 1. Supporters of Strauss-Kahn, who many saw as a likely candidate for France's 2012 presidential election, suspected that he had been the victim of a smear campaign.
